The Two-Step Fuel Formula

Litres needed = Distance (km) ÷ Vehicle Fuel Average (km/L)
Trip Cost (Rs.) = Litres needed × Price per litre (Rs.)

Car averages are based on standard highway driving. For exact city vs highway measurement, use the fuel average calculator.

Step-by-step method

How to Calculate Fuel Cost for a Trip

You can figure out the fuel cost for any trip in two steps:

Step 1: Litres NeededLitres needed = distance (km) ÷ fuel average (km/L)
Step 2: Total CostFuel cost (Rs.) = litres needed × petrol price per litre

Example: A 1300cc car (14.5 km/L) driving Lahore to Islamabad (378 km) needs 378 ÷ 14.5 = 26.1 litres. At today's price of Rs. 377.71 per litre, that is Rs. 9,860 (rounded to nearest Rs. 10).

With AC on, the average drops by about 12% (14.5 → 12.76 km/L), so the same trip needs about 29.6 litres. For a return trip, double the litres and the cost.

Fuel consumption & running cost

Petrol Cost per km by Car Type

A quick way to estimate fuel cost for travel is to know how much petrol your car uses for every 100 km. Multiply the litres by today's price to get the cost, or divide the price by your km/L to get the cost per km.

Cost per km (Rs.) = petrol price ÷ fuel average (km/L)

Averages are the calculator's default values for highway driving. Your real average may be different; find it with the fuel average calculator.

Variables & real-world conditions

What Changes Your Fuel Cost?

❄️Air Conditioning (AC)

Adds about 10% more fuel in this calculator due to engine compressor load.

⚡Cruising Speed

On motorways, 90–100 km/h usually uses less petrol than high-drag 120 km/h.

🚦City Traffic

Stop-start urban congestion consumes significantly more petrol than steady highway cruising.

🧳Vehicle Load

A full car and heavy boot luggage lower your vehicle's effective kilometre per litre.

🔧Car Condition

Underinflated tyres, a clogged air filter or degraded engine oil noticeably raise fuel use.

🔄Return Trip

Selecting a round trip doubles the total distance, required litres and final petrol expenditure.

Carpool & shared travel

Split Petrol Expense Between Passengers

Travelling with friends or family? Add the number of passengers and this petrol expense calculator divides the fuel cost equally, so everyone knows their share before the trip. Share the result on WhatsApp with your group.

Commercial & 4x4 vehicles

Diesel Fuel Cost Calculator

Driving a diesel car, van or 4x4? Choose High Speed Diesel as the fuel type and the calculator uses today's diesel price per litre. The formula is the same: litres needed = distance ÷ km/L, cost = litres × diesel price.

Common questions

Fuel Cost Calculator FAQs

Divide the distance by your car's fuel average to get the litres needed, then multiply by the petrol price per litre. This fuel cost calculator does both steps for you.

Where Our Numbers Come From

Petrol and diesel prices come from official OGRA notifications and are updated when a new price is announced. Car averages are typical highway values that you can change. The carbon estimate uses about 2.3 kg of CO₂ per litre of petrol burned. Last updated: April 2026.
