Motorway or GT Road: Which Route Should You Take?

Most long trips in Pakistan can be driven on a motorway or on the GT Road and national highways. Here is how they usually compare:

PRACTICAL DRIVER INTELLIGENCE

Route Notes for Pakistan's Busiest Trips

Verified driving conditions and tactical guidance for key intercity corridors.

Lahore to Islamabad

The M-2 Motorway is the usual choice: a steady drive with service areas and M-Tag toll plazas. The GT Road (N-5) passes through Gujranwala, Jhelum and other cities, so it is slower, but useful if you need to stop on the way.

Islamabad to Murree

The Murree Expressway is short but gets very busy on weekends and holidays. In winter, check snow and road updates before you leave, and start early.

Lahore to Karachi

One of the longest drives in the country. Most of it can now be done on motorways, with highway links in between. Plan at least one long rest stop, and avoid driving tired at night.

Karachi to Hyderabad

The M-9 Motorway makes this a short, direct drive. Traffic at the Karachi end can add time at rush hour.

ESTIMATE ACCURACY

What Affects Your Travel Time?

Why your real drive time may vary from highway navigation estimates.

trafficCity Traffic

Leaving and entering big cities can take longer than the motorway part due to toll bottleneck queues and arterial congestion.

foggyFog & Smog

In winter, especially December and January, dense smog or fog can slow traffic or cause Motorway Police to close sections.

constructionRoad Works & Diversions

Re-carpeting, bridge repairs, and diversions on national highways and city ring roads can introduce unexpected detours.

local_cafeRest & Prayer Stops

Meal, prayer, refuelling, and driver fatigue breaks on long trips typically add 20 to 45 minutes every 250 kilometers.

speedSpeed Limits

Strict NHMP speed cameras enforce 120 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h in mountain passes like the Salt Range.

HIGHWAY READINESS

Before You Go: Road Trip Checklist

Essential pre-departure steps recommended by Pakistan Motorway Police (NHMP).

  • ✓Top up your M-Tag balance if your route uses a motorway to avoid cash lane delays and penalties.
  • ✓Check fog, weather and road updates; call Motorway Police 130 for real-time motorway conditions.
  • ✓Save emergency numbers: Motorway Police 130 · Rescue 1122 · Edhi 115.
  • ✓Check tyres, fuel and the spare wheel, along with engine coolant levels and windscreen wiper fluid.
  • ✓Plan a rest stop every 2–3 hours on long drives to remain alert and prevent highway hypnosis.
